Why you should have trust in your builder’s sales representative

If you are shopping around for a new home and have been visiting a few display homes, you are probably well aware that you should be looking at floor plans, designs, quality and finishes to help you make a decision. However, you may be overlooking a very important factor that could greatly determine the outcome of your home and whether you’ll find the building process stressful or enjoyable. This important aspect – or rather person – is the building company’s sales representative.

Sales representatives are the first point of contact between potential clients and the builders, and an experienced and well organised company knows the importance of this team member and the role he or she plays in the company’s success. A builder’s sales representative will be involved in most aspects of the building process and works closely with the client and other various departments. The sale’s representative is responsible for duties varying from greeting and assisting prospective customers at display homes, to providing forms, quotes, contracts and other paper work, to assisting customers with selecting a home plan, site and structural and design options. Sales representatives are usually carefully selected and well-trained to represent a business’s personality, ethics and company policies accurately and with consistency.

Keeping this in mind, if you don’t like and trust the sales representative, then you may want to reconsider whether you trust the company with the responsibility, costs and process of building your new home.

Get to know the sales representative
To determine if you trust a sales representative you should get to know them to a certain extent. Start off by having a chat with the representative present at each display home that you visit. Take note of their appearance and behaviour. Is the sales representative friendly, approachable and positive? Does the sales representative’s manner reflect and complement the level of quality that is displayed in the home? In only a few minutes you will already be able to form a clear idea about the person and the manner in which they portray the company. Once you’ve been introduced to the sales representative you’ll be able to ask questions and get their contact information. You will probably contact them again if you liked the home or have additional questions – this will also enable you to get to know the sales representative better. Below are more traits and skills that you’ll find in a reliable sales representative.

  • Well-informed – knows the whole company and building processes well
  • Is willing to give all the necessary information you may require
  • Friendly, professional and communicates well
  • Truthful and honest
  • Gives accurate and realistic cost and time estimates
  • Works in an organised and reliable manner
  • Follows up and delivers on promises made

It is not always possible to determine whether a person is honest and if the builders will deliver what the sales representative has promised. This is why some research is important. A quick search on the internet or call to references will give you a good idea of whether previous clients were satisfied with the building process, the outcome and quality of their home and the professionalism of all the staff and builders involved.
