THE Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has cut the official interest rate by half a percentage point to 3.75 per cent after its May board meeting, its lowest level in over two years. The last time the RBA cut the cash rate by 50 basis points or more was in February 2009 - before the GFC - when it cut the rate by a full percentage point. This is good news for all home owners as they wait for their banks to hopefully move in the same direction. A 50 basis point decrease in their interest rates means a reduction of around $120 pm in repayments for the average mortgage.
